As it could not be otherwise, from Oligofastx we join in the celebration of the World Cancer Day, February 4, promoted by The World Cancer Society World Health Organization the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the International Union Against Cancer (UICC) with the aim of raising awareness and mobilizing society to advance in the prevention and control of this disease.
The campaign theme for 2022 – 2024 is “For fairer care”. The hashtag #ForFairerCare.
The aim is to understand and recognize the inequalities in cancer care in the world, trying to eliminate them so that we can all have equal access to the necessary treatment in each case.
There are multiple barriers that cause inequity in treatment: for example, gender norms, minority population groups, socio-economic status, age, homophobia, transphobia and others.
The aim is to enhance equity in treatment, giving each person just what he or she needs.
It is estimated that approximately one in two men and one in three women will develop cancer at some point in their lives. More than 14 million new cases are diagnosed worldwide each year and the disease causes 9.6 million deaths each year. the disease causes 9.6 million deaths a year.
There are more than 200 different types of cancer and not for all of them there is a solution. From Oligofastx we research and develop new therapeutic routes based on oligonucleotides with the aim of improving the quality of life of patients suffering from specific rare diseases for which there is currently no solution. Among them, the cancer cachexia or anaplastic thyroid cancer .
Risk factors for cancer
There are many types of cancer that a person can develop, due to multiple causes. In many cases, risk factors cannot be modified, but about one third of cancer cases can be avoided by reducing the main risk factors.
Non-modifiable risk factors are age or genetics.
The risk factors that we can control are, among others:
- Consumption of alcohol, tobacco and drugs.
- Food and diet.
- Physical activity and exercise.
- Radiation or exposure to carcinogenic substances.
- Certain infections.
Supporting each other
We are working to contribute our knowledge, area of expertise and scientific research, but each and every one of us, individually, can contribute to improve the situation.
Simple gestures such as supporting people affected or collaborating with associations, carrying out health checks, contributing to the awareness and dissemination of the disease, including activity through social networks using the hashtag #WorldCancerDay, contributing in some way to research against this disease or consulting the list of global activities that are planned and that you can consult here .
