Celebrating World Health Day: “My health, my right”

At OLIGOFASTX, we work to develop therapeutic solutions for patients living with rare diseases. That is why World Health Day, celebrated every 7 April, is an occasion to reflect on the challenges and successes in global health. This year’s theme is “My Health, My Right”, highlighting the fundamental importance of equitable access to health services and dignified living conditions for all people, everywhere.

The current context reminds us that millions of people face significant threats to their health around the world. From disease and disasters to conflict and environmental crises, the challenges are diverse and complex. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted existing disparities in health care and intensified the need to address deep-seated inequities.

According to the WHO Council on Health Economics for All, more than half of the world’s population, at least 4.5 billion people, do not have full access to essential health services. This situation reinforces the urgency of promoting and protecting the right to health as a basic human right.

This year’s slogan, “My health, my right”, aims to empower people by focusing on several key aspects:

  1. Universal access to health services: Everyone should have access to basic medical care and quality health services, regardless of geographic location, income or social status.
  2. Education and information: Knowledge is power. It is essential to provide accessible and understandable health education and resources to empower people to make informed decisions about their well-being.
  3. Decent living conditions: Health is intrinsically linked to factors such as adequate housing, nutritious food, clean water and a safe working environment.
  4. Healthy environment: The quality of air, water and the environment in general directly impacts the health of communities. We must advocate for policies and practices that protect our natural environment.
  5. Nondiscrimination: Everyone has the right to health care without discrimination based on gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation or economic status.

On this World Health Day, we pledge to continue working to create meaningful and tangible changes to ensure that every person can fully enjoy the right to health.
